Very good, Destiny. I am glad you are doing this writing and staying in the arena. Your points about crossover voting (mostly I suspect stealthy done in the secrecy of the voting booth to avoid shunning by one's family and contacts) should be compared to the possibility of cultivating new voters from the very large pool of non-voters. Figure out why half of eligible voters nationwide, or more, dislike both parties so much that they see nothing for themselves in participating. The words fairness and opportunity (aka The American Dream) are a place to start analyzing the mechanics of government, employment and politics.
Taking the cake analogy one more step backward, you described a reliable recipe for using the ingredients, assuming that they are readily available. But they are not. There is really only one ingredient and that is people who see value in participating. Many more than are available today. The ingredients need a new reason, a good reason to their minds, for why they should offer themselves up to make a cake that will benefit their lives and those of their family and descendants. The only cakes they have seen for a long time are a dried up, tooth cracking red one and a decorated one with sweet blue icing that crumbles when cut and has no flavor.
Since I'm still fairly new in Indiana, by chance to you know offhand what the Marion County turnout was in 2008, 2010 and 2012? In 2008 PBO was at the top of the ticket and we carried the state; by 2010 the Tea Party was pumping its BS; in 2012 Romney carried the state. I'm curious as to whether there was an unusual spike in turnout in 08 and whether 2010 and 2012 merely returned to traditional low turnout.
Also, when did the voter suppression ID law take effect in its present form? We were able to use our new Real ID drivers' licenses but in order to get those we had to shell out $25 each to get certified copies of our birth certificates. Can we say poll tax?
Otherwise, if I were 15 years less decrepit, I'd jump in. Thanks again.
Amen, sister. We should do a brain dump of the encyclopedia of this stuff in my head going back to 2006 sometime.

Excellent piece, and I hope the first of many.
